Love is Never Abuse: Domestic Violence is Never OK
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and it is time to snatch your Power back.
According to the UN (United Nations), domestic violence is "any act of gender-based violence that results in physical, sexual, or mental harm." This type of violence doesn't look the same for everyone and is definitely not specific to one gender.
Equally important, men, women, and children have experienced different types of violence. Physical, sexual, psychological, or mental violence, occurs from a partner, family member, or someone they trust.
1 in 3 women has been subject to domestic violence. WHO (World Health Organization) reports on behalf of the UN, that this includes physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner or non-partner sexual violence or both. WHO has derived a global plan of action to address this epidemic.
1 in 10 men in the U.S. has experienced sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner. Also, men often do not report their abuse because of fear of ridicule and shame. The views on domestic violence vary by culture and by gender. When a man shares that he is being abused, depending on his culture, he is often viewed as weak, or his reports get ignored. This may lead to a man feeling emasculated and can lead to him having challenges in future romantic relationships.
Moreover, domestic violence is NOT OK and victims can experience lifelong effects. PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), continued migraines, varying body pains, unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, increased smoking are only some of the effects of domestic violence.
It is time to affect change. Let's make it our goal in life to spread Love.
